ABOUT NANNPU INC. NEW YORK CHAPTER

According to the AANP, nurse practitioners (NPs) have provided high-quality healthcare services to patients across the nation for more than 50 years. Nurse Practitioners provide primary and some acute care services. They are qualified to meet the majority of patients’ healthcare needs, and indeed are the future of health care in America.

Here, in New York State, The National Association of Nigerian Nurse Practitioners, USA, Inc. New York Chapter (NANNPU-NY) is a unified voice for all nurse practitioners from Nigeria residing in New York state. We aimed at promoting a comprehensive approach to health care, emphasize the overall health and wellness of our patients, and advocate for change in New York’s health care system all for the benefit of our patients.

According to the recent 2019 National NP sample survey by the AANP, more than 290,000 of nurse practitioners are licensed to practice in the United States. Today, members of the NANNPU-NY are among them and fighting the good fight, taking the heat, and doing it beautifully as advanced practice registered nurses.

On December 9, 2018, the NANNPU-NY was founded during an inaugural meeting which took place via a teleconference and attended by five members. The convener earlier participated at the inauguration of the Dallas- Fort Worth Chapter of the NANNPU on April 28, 2018. The idea to convene the meeting was to start an association with a similar vision for all nurse practitioners of Nigerian extraction residing and practicing in New York state. Thus, the association will enable members to network with other members throughout the United States.

Moreover, we held the first face-to-face meeting of the association on November 16, 2019, at Dai Sushi, Japanese Cuisine, Pleasantville, New York, in an atmosphere that exemplified overwhelming acceptance. On July 21, 2019, the founding members elected an interim executive that has been working tirelessly to position the association on a sound foundation.

Today, the NANNPU-NY remains officially incorporated as a not-for-profit organization on December 18, 2019, and widely recognized and respected as the professional voice of Nigerian nurse practitioners in New York State. The purpose of this association is to promote recognition of the NP’s role by the other professional health care organizations as well as the public, to act as a support system for Nigerian NPs in New York, and to provide a forum for the exchange of information by members. Our biggest strength lies in our members. Membership in NANNPU-NY is a way to reach out to other Nigerian NPs both in New York and other states to discuss the problems facing us in our practice and to help chart the course of nursing into the future. We welcome you as you add your voice to the growing movement of the Nigerian NPs in New York state.
